but as for youRecently I’ve been learning just how serious God takes marriage and the family unit. He is clear from the beginning when He told Abraham He would bless him. This blessing was going to flow through the family unit to Isaac, Jacob and all the nations of the earth. In Genesis 18:19 He said, “For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just, so that the Lord will bring about for Abraham what He has promised.”

When I look at myself and the young folks around I get pitiful. Not to pity us but to pity children who will be called by our name. We live so recklessly and its clear we may not have a modicum of godliness to pass on to our children.

Growing up, my born again mum taught me several things that have helped me appreciate the importance of passing on morals. I was told men’s cubicles were out of bound. I would probably be comfortably spending in the men’s hostels in school had she not pointed out that it was immoral. She also instilled in me a conviction of treating men with absolute purity and guarding my boundaries. Most importantly, she taught me the word. I owe my christian foundation to her.

But what will I pass to my kids? If I live recklessly and as if morality standards are no longer in existence, or if I reject the truth that was passed down to me what will happen to my children? I’ll probably cause a whole generation of sinners. Or may be truth will be very scarce in the generation after me, that only few will find it.

When God told the Israelites in Deuteronomy 11 to talk about God’s laws to their children as they walked or worked, and to even write them on the door frames, He seriously meant that. Lets take a look at the society today. Most of the evils around have been birthed at family level. Irresponsibility in passing on godly values! Will we continue living this way? Not after we know the truth,

Even if we do not care about ourselves, lets care for our children. If the gospel of the Savior Jesus is to be advanced, then people have to be brought up in godly ways, beginning from the family before getting to the church. And it’s something achievable. If only we are willing!

Steve Green says it so nicely in his song “Find us faithful”;

We’re pilgrims on the journey of the narrow road
And those who’ve gone before us line the way
Cheering on the faithful, encouraging the weary
Their lives a stirring testament to God’s sustaining grace

Surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses
Let us run the race not only for the prize
But as those who’ve gone before us, let us leave to those behind us
The heritage of faithfulness passed on through godly lives

Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful
May the fire of our devotion light their way
May the footprints that we leave, lead them to believe
And the lives we live inspire them to obey
Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful

After all our hopes and dreams have come and gone
And our children sift through all we’ve left behind
May the clues that they discover and the memories they uncover
Become the light that leads them to the road we each must find

Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful
May the fire of our devotion light their way
May the footprints that we leave, lead them to believe
And the lives we live inspire them to obey

Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful
May the fire of our devotion light their way
May the footprints that we leave, lead them to believe
And the lives we live inspire them to obey
Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful
Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful

God will always have a remnant. But we are called to be coworkers with Christ. So let’s do something about it. Lets invest in godly lives to honor and also to make Him known. That way we’ll have a rich heritage of faithfulness to pass on. So, who’s in?
